Why ISO 14001 if CBAM does not directly require it
The CBAM regulation does not make ISO 14001 certification a formal condition for reporting. But it does require actual data on embedded emissions, and without systematic monitoring of energy consumption, fuel and production processes a company physically cannot support these figures with anything other than the inflated default values set by the European Commission. ISO 14001 provides the regular, documented accounting on which a robust actual calculation is built instead of default figures.
The difference shows in the cost: the more accurate and lower your actual emissions, the fewer CBAM certificates your EU buyer has to purchase for the declared volume, and therefore the cheaper your products are compared with competitors who cannot prove anything other than default values.
What ISO 14001 is
ISO 14001 is the international standard for an Environmental Management System (EMS). It defines how a company systematically identifies its environmental impact (energy and raw material consumption, emissions, waste), controls it and consistently reduces it following the Plan–Do–Check–Act cycle, rather than producing one-off reports ahead of an audit.
How we implement ISO 14001
Gap analysis
We compare your current processes with the requirements of the standard and determine exactly what is missing for compliance.
System documentation
We develop the policy, procedures and registers of environmental aspects tailored to your actual production, with no copy-paste templates.
Implementation and training
We train the responsible employees and bring monitoring procedures into the company's day-to-day work.
Certification audit
We prepare the company for the review by an independent accredited body and support you during the audit itself.
What we need from you to get started
For a gap analysis we need three things: a description of the production processes and sites, data on current energy and raw material consumption (even incomplete data is fine at the start), and a contact for a technical specialist who knows production from the inside, not just the reporting.
Haven't yet calculated how much you could save on CBAM certificates?
Call us: in 15 minutes we will give a rough estimate of how reducing emissions would affect the cost of certificates for your buyer.
Frequently asked questions
About implementing ISO 14001 and how it relates to CBAM.
Is ISO 14001 mandatory for CBAM reporting?
No, the CBAM regulation does not require ISO 14001 certification as a formal condition. But it is the environmental management system that provides the regular monitoring of emissions, fuel and energy consumption data on which a robust actual calculation is built, instead of the EU's inflated default values.
How long does it take to implement ISO 14001?
It depends on the size of the company, the number of production sites and how formalised its processes already are. We give an exact timeline after a gap analysis, a comparison of the current state with the requirements of the standard.
How does ISO 14001 differ from ISO 14064, which you also mention?
ISO 14001 is the standard for environmental management systems: how an organisation systematically identifies, controls and reduces its environmental impact. ISO 14064 is the standard for quantifying and verifying greenhouse gases: how exactly to calculate and confirm the volume of emissions. For CBAM, the data from emissions accounting matters more, but an ISO 14001 management system makes that accounting regular and reliable rather than a one-off exercise.
Who carries out the certification audit, and do you certify yourselves?
The certification audit is carried out by an independent accredited certification body; we do not certify ourselves or the client in this process. Our role is to prepare the management system documentation and production processes so that the audit is passed without findings the first time.
